Visualisation of station-level data of the Indian Railways

Visualisation of station-level data of the Indian Railways

The dataset that we have have used to build the visual data mining tools for the Indian Railways includes details of around 4200 stations collected from the routes of 2800 trains. In our other visualisations, the focus is on region-specific details in the train arrivals and departures. But the structure of the visualisations did not allow investigation at the level of individual stations.
In this visual data mining tool, we have made it possible to analyse the train arrivals/departures at the level of individual stations. We have also made it possible to select multiple stations to perform summed analysis of multiple stations.
In this tool, click on any of the stations to see the train departures/arrivals at the stations over the week. The x-axis is the time of the week and the y-axis is the number of trains that depart/arrive. The train departure/arrivals are visualised in bins of 2 hours each. The background of the histogram guides the user and shows the time of the day. If the background is bright it is day, if it is dark then it is night.

STEPS TO USE THE VISUALIZATION:

Select a station from the map by clicking on any of the yellow Dots (STATIONS) on the map. A time resolved histogram of number of trains from that particular station appears along with the Station Name in the box on the bottom right. The height of the bars corresponds to the number of trains and the position of the bar on the horizontal axis dentes the day of the week (Sunday, Monday etc) and the the time of day (morning, noon, evening, night). One can also Check the ENABLE MULTIPLE STATIONS IN GRAPH on the right to view the summed histogram of multiple stations to analyse. Upto 4 stations can be selected at a time.
